Sri Lanka Thrash United Arab Emirates despite Early Collapse at 129

malingaNew Delhi, Friday, February 26 – At Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Thursday, 2nd match of the Asia Cup was played between Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates. The toss was won by UAE who elected to bowl first. The decision was predictable as a team usually wants to restrict opponents on a low total. Facing Sri Lanka was not easy but United Arab Emirates put forward good show by restricting rivals at a total score of 129 for the loss of 8 wickets.

Sri Lankan Playing XI had Lasith Malinga, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Shehan Jayasuriya, Dinesh Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Milinda Siriwardana, Chamara Kapugedera, Dasun Shanaka, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath and Dushmantha Chameera. Those who sat on bench were Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Niroshan Dickwella and Jeffrey Vandersay.

On the other hand, Amjad Javed led UAE side that had Rohan Mustafa, Muhammad Kaleem, Mohammad Shahzad, Shaiman Anwar, Muhammad Usman, Mohammad Naveed, Saqlain Haider, Swapnil Patil, Ahmed Raza and Qadeer Ahmed. Usman Mushtaq, Fahad Tariq, Farhan Ahmed and Zaheer Maqsood watched all happenings of the contest while sitting on the seats affixed outside boundary line. Venue scoring pattern points out to the fact that average first inning score is 150 and average second inning score is 127. Highest total of 204 for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs was set by New Zealand in opposition to Bangladesh. Lowest total of 72 for the loss of 10 wickets in 17.1 overs was put by Afghanistan against Bangladesh.

Highest chased of 179 was done by West Indies against Australia. Lowest total of 107 was defended by Sri Lanka in opposition to West Indies. Opening batsman Dinesh Chandimal was the leading scorer with a fifty. Javed got his wicket but very late as the Sri Lankan wicket-keeper sent the ball into the fences for seven times and hit a biggie. Javed dismissed Tillakaratne Dilshan at 27, inclusive four 4s. Middle order completely collapsed as Milinda Siriwardana was out at 6 runs, Dasun Shanaka at 5 runs and Angelo Mathews at 8 runs. Both Shehan Jayasuriya and Chamara Kapugedera scored 10 runs. Nuwan Kulasekara was out at 7 runs and Dushmantha Chameera was not out at a single. Extra 5 runs were given by UAE. Amjad Javed earned three wickets, Shahzad and Naveed two wickets each and Mustafa one wicket.

When it came to chasing, United Arab Emirates fumbled and this added to pressure on them right from the beginning. The opener Rohan Mustafa was given legs before wickets at a zero on very first ball of Malinga. Muhammad Kaleem played a knock of 7 runs off 11 balls. Mohammad Shahzad was sent back to the dressing room at 1 run.  Muhammad Usman hit a four and scored 6 but soon had to depart after Kulasekara delivered a wonderful delivery. Shaiman Anwar struck a couple of fours to get 13 runs, however, couldn’t contribute much in the success of team.

Swapnil Patil tried his best to stabilize wobbly innings of his squad. He totaled 37 runs in 36 balls, together with three 4s and two sixes. Saqlain Haider pocketed a single and later failed to read a delivery by Herath. Amjad Javed, the UAE captain was out at 13 runs. Mohammad Naveed had to go back at 10 runs. Ahmed Raza was not out at 9 runs and Qadeer Ahmed not out at 2 runs. They had one wicket in hand but overs were over when UAE were attempting to get a win on their side. They fell 14 runs short to thrash Sri Lanka, who began their journey in Asia Cup with a victory.
